The building complex of Youyi Bay breaks the grid order of the surrounding area, reduces the volume of buildings. The hotel with a U-shaped plan and the apartment with an L-shaped plan are arranged diagonally, enclosing two trapezoidal squares and a triangular courtyard together with surrounding buildings. Retail arcade is set on the ground floor of the apartments. The different scales of squares and courtyards enrich the hierarchical public nature of the outdoor spaces at Youyi Bay. The orientations of hotel and apartment rooms are divided into internal and external, providing residents with more choices. The diagonally connected squares connect the pedestrian roads of the north and south zones, and people can enter the triangular courtyard from all directions through the buildings. The square enclosed by the hotel, apartments, and The chapel of music is the core of public life in the southern zone. One of the key roles of this project is to offer the community a space that can accommodate these shifting uses—a kind of shared, multifunctional living room. It’s not easy to define what such a space must be. Some might argue for maximum flexibility and changeability—a neutral container, like many contemporary galleries or museums, where architecture steps back and remains silent. But that’s not the approach we took. We didn’t want the building to disappear. This pop-up store, resembling a small showroom, can be rented to different vendors based on various holidays and community events. The ceiling of the living room is exposed fair-faced concrete, which we painted with a thin layer of white topcoat without applying putty, thus preserving the hard texture of the concrete. We’ve visited it twice since residents moved in. Residential architecture is a little different from public buildings. On one hand, it needs to meet general expectations for livability and market acceptance—there’s a degree of restraint built into that. On the other hand, it’s also an intensely personal space, one that continues to evolve after handover. In that sense, the design process doesn’t really end with us—it carries on with the people who live there. One resident told us, “Your kitchen counter was way too small—I couldn’t work on it at all!” So they built a generously sized one. Another merged two bedrooms into a single space and removed the wall between the bedroom and living room. Some even combined two units into one. Visiting these homes—each modified and lived in differently—has been unexpectedly rewarding. Of course, we could only document a handful of them, but even so, we got a glimpse of the diversity of life that’s taken root there.
