Adjacent to the runway, with the apron and terminal to the south and the international show gardens zone to the east, the site of the Blooming Garden was a 590m-long strip, 72m at its widest and 30m at its narrowest, consisting of a stretch of grassland, a small grove, and a parking lot. This vast dimension requires spatial definition to reduce the space from aircraft scales to human scales, creating a more human-friendly environment. Rich vegetation is therefore needed not only to create a natural environment and improve ecological functions, but also to reflect the Blooming Garden’s theme and meet the goals of Garden Expo.Thus, the design of Blooming Garden aims to create human-scale spaces internally while also harmonizing with the open runway externally. By sculpting the site’s topography, the design intends to transform the original monotonous environment into a dynamic landscape, offering diverse paths and experiences. It also aims to provide optimal conditions for plant growth, presenting unique landscape aesthetics and displaying horticultural art. The upper level features a gentle slope facing the runway, planted with various cherry blossom species, forming a simple and elegant landscape that complements the expansive runway and provides spaces for residents’ daily activities and interactions. Below, an herbaceous garden with diverse flowers is interlaced with boardwalks and platforms, offering visitors the opportunity to appreciate the flowers up close. Interspersed in the formal flower fields are four color-themed gardens, enclosed by organically shaped railings. The gardens—Red, Yellow, White, and Blue—display plants of different color ranges in natural groupings. The height difference of 0 to 4 meters between the upper and lower spaces creates rich spatial diversity within the Blooming Garden. Along the edge of the upper space is a zigzag path, with two viewing platforms formed by expanding the path. Situated at the highest point of the garden, these platforms allow visitors to not only overlook the herbaceous garden and appreciate the plants from a different perspective but also gaze into the distance at the iconic airport control tower. Perforations in the corten steel railing panels and retaining walls form abstract floral patterns, emphasizing the garden’s theme. A wooden amphitheater connects the two levels, offering an informal performance stage and a seating area. Two paths pass through the retaining wall, linking the herbaceous garden to the runway. At the intersection of these sections, long benches, backed against the undulating corten steel retaining wall, provide comfortable resting spots.
