The intervention intends to design a workspace through elements influenced by the existing architecture. A raw space where the concrete structure is exposed in its crudest state. Playing with the counterpoint of elegance and sophistication of the elements that make up the space, treated as true sculptures made of stainless steel, the staircase that acts as a bridge in the verticality of the space and the kitchen in its horizontality. Taking inspiration from the digital world of Andres Reisinger, and creating a surreal and oneiric space.

The project consists of a transformation of a ground floor establishment into a workspace for Andres Reisinger and his creative studio. A multifunctional workspace, aimed at offering a working area, kitchen, dining area, terrace, a private office and other utilities. The space is located in Barcelona, in the neighbourhood of Poblenou. With direct street access and a large back terrace. Upon entering from the street the space has a double ceiling leading to a second floor. Dividing the back facade in two. The first decision was to demolish the back half of the second floor. Transforming the studio from a space with two floors with low ceilings to one big open space with a mezzanine. Allowing the mezzanine to stand out as an architectural element and letting in more natural light.

The materiality of the walls and floor was chosen to match the raw tones and textures of the existing concrete. First the colour and texture of the walls was chose. Finished with a quartz based paint in the from of a paste. This paint give the walls an irregular and and artisanal look and feel. With a velvet smooth touch but a raw look that reminds of crude natural materials. With a grey-beige tone that matches the concrete structure and ceiling. Through this material the micro-cement was chosen to have the same tone and textured effect. To create a monochromatic world.

Leading to a stainless steel spiral staircase that further emphasises the height of the space. And behind it a stainless steel kitchen from floor to ceiling. The materiality of these elements contrasts the raw and crudity of the exposed concrete. A sophisticated, fine and minimal material that gives these elements a sculpture like from. The stainless steel elements retain their presence in the space, while still blending in the respecting the general aesthetic.  This materiality is continued on in the rest of the space through the mechanisms with a polished nickel finish.

We wanted to design a table that continues throughout the space. A space that is solved with a large table hanging from an existing pillar. A table that serves as a work space and dining area. As we wanted to keep the table at the same level and emphasise the continuity of the table we decided to raise the floor of the work area, which in turn helps us to pass cable to the rack and reinforces the limits of use from architecture. The table’s pink color allows it stand out in the rest of the monochromatic space. It is the center piece of the studio its form respects the existing architecture of the space. Avoiding any curves or ornamental features we decided to use straight lines and geometrical from to mirror the rest of the architecture. An element that was made on site. Behind the left side of the table  are a series of the built in drywall shelfs, that dissimulate in with the architecture. Emphasising the concept of an element that was there to begin with. These shelves serve as a background for the work area, to be able to expose works and publication by the studio.

The lighting in the studio is achieved through unconventional methods. The only inherently technical lighting is present in the first double height space upon entering the studio from the street, with tracks and dimmable spot lights by LEDsC4. The rest of the lighting in the space is achieved through linestras placed strategically in various spaces. However the main light fixture of the space is the 120cm in diameter spherical lamp; “Moon” by Davide Groppi. The moon suspends from the double weighted ceiling above the working area. It has a wrinkled paper texture, that when illuminated from the light source inside, resembles the moon. It gives off a soft and relaxing light that completely changes the ambience of the studio during the night time. The light of the moon spreads across the whole studio including the mezzanine. Creating a surreal and dreamlike ambience, that resembles the work of the Andres Reisinger.

The bathroom at the top of the stairs has a distinct form, as it curves on the edge of the mezzanine in a circular shape. Creating a contrast between the curved walls the edge of the concrete platform. The curved wall of the bathroom outside continues on inside transforming into a series of panelled wardrobes. This elevation forms part of the architecture, the finishing imitates a raw and crude material and blends in with the existing concrete of the space. The built in concrete sofa is covered in micro-cement to unify the space. With a pink cushion matching the concrete table below. The touches of pink in the space, mark the identity of the artist while resembling the oneiric worlds he creates.

The main custom made work table, inspired by Donald Judd, is made of oak. Fabricated by a local artisan.  A warm material, with a soft touch. That contrasts with the raw materiality of the rest of the space. The oak gives unique touch to the space, a more homelike feel. Continued on with the LC7 armchairs by Cassina. The intentional use of furniture and lighting that does’t follow the normal aesthetics of an office, give the studio a more comfortable feel. Creating a space that looks dreamlike, serene and surreal. Merging the lines between the physical world and the digital world.

The same concept is applied to the design of the terrace. With the same micro cement finish as the interior. The terrace is a relaxing and zen space. With a partition of ,forrest like, plants that separate the busy environment outside from the oneiric ambience inside. Through the use of various typologies of plants, with wild forest appearance, curated by AELAND, this separation of worlds was achieved. The sunlight filters through the different heights and forms of plants, creating organic and fluid shadows in the floor inside. The terrace and use of long flowing translucent white curtain on both facades act as a barrier between the digital dreamscape inside and the world outside.
