Vanishing Form, Flowing Poetics

Tucked into the core waterfront of Luxelakes Park in Chengdu, adjacent to the Whirlpool Theater, this café quietly merges into a landscape defined by swirling paths, water, and vegetation. Rather than standing out, the building is conceived to emerge from the landscape — present, yet understated, gradually disappearing into the surroundings as if part of the site’s unfolding story.

Embedded in the landscape

As a renovation project, the former structure presented multiple challenges: a closed, awkward interface with the landscape, a heavy roof mass, and materials out of sync with the natural environment. Our response is rooted in a “language of flow.” The goal is not to create a bold landmark, but to let the architecture become a natural continuation of the whirlpool-inspired locale — perceptible at human scale, yet visually absorbed by water, slope, and greenery; a soft architectural whisper rather than a shout.

Embedded in the Landscape, Softened Through Continuity

By aligning the building with the site’s curving waterfront paths and gently recessing its perimeter, the café is re-integrated into the existing context. The structure ceases to compete with its surroundings. Instead, it opens toward nature — softening boundaries, letting the breeze and light flow through, and reconnecting architecture with the rhythms of water and terrain.

Structural Refinement, Releasing Transparency

We retained as much of the original structural system as possible while removing the two outermost columns. This reductive move not only softens the building’s boundary but also diminishes the heavy volumetric presence of the original roof. Structurally the interior remains ordered; externally the building relaxes toward nature—an architectural tension of “taut inside, loose outside” that opens up visual and physical permeability.

A Breathable Glass Façade

Surrounding the building we specified ultra-clear, tempered laminated glass within a minimalist operable framing system to create an almost crystalline enclosure. In its normal state the façade reads as a continuous glass volume; when needed, multiple door leaves can fold fully open, erasing the boundary between inside and out. The façade height is carefully controlled at 5.2 m, with a clear eave height of 4.5 m and door openings of 3.0 m—proportions that secure expansive views and daylight while preserving a comfortable, human-scaled interior.

Landscape Resonance, A Growing Texture

The roof is deconstructed into a four-layer poetic assembly from top to bottom: an upper planted soil layer — a subtle parapet — a second planted soil layer — and thermo-printed honeycomb aluminum panels with a Corten-like texture. We selected roof planting—such as Viola banksii and Phyla canescens—to make the roof as if grown from the earth, a continuation of the landscape when viewed from above. The roof surface facing the sky thus becomes an extension of the park rather than a separate architectural object.

Formed in subtlety

The corten-textured honeycomb panels visually and tactually echo the weathering steel elements around the site, as if carrying the memory of time. The extensive use of ultra-clear glass further dilutes the building’s solidity, gifting it a light, breathable quality that allows daylight, water reflections and interior shadows to mingle freely.

Program & Circulation — Weaving Water, Land and People

Internally the program is organized into three clear zones: approximately 155 m² for display and leisurely dining, a 45 m² high-efficiency bar/operation area, and a service core that houses back-of-house, storage and sanitary facilities. The building has two primary entries: a main public entrance facing the park’s landscape, and a service entrance aligned with the logistical lane. The latter faces the boat landing, creating a natural junction between waterborne and land-based access.

Visitors may arrive along the lakeside path or step ashore from a small craft, traverse this transparent vessel and rejoin the broader park. The café performs as a vital connector, stitching lake, architecture and woodland into a continuous experiential sequence.

|| “柔软”的商业,社区的舞台 一级标题“Soft” Commerce — A Stage for Community

While fulfilling commercial needs, the building aspires first to be an emotional and mnemonic anchor for the community. More than a café, it seeks to be Luxelakes’ warm, shared living room—facing the open water, knitting together winding paths and quiet waterways. It is a gathering point and a catalyst for events.

An environment-integrated minimalist place

At a recent waterside film festival, audiences sat inside as the fully opened glass façade reframed images reflected upon the rippling water; others paddled kayaks and gathered on the broad water before the building to enjoy balmy summer evenings. Children played in the nearby musical fountain, their laughter rising with the mist. In these moments the architecture recedes and becomes stage—silently holding the everyday life and social energy of the neighborhood.

MUDA-Architects continues to pursue a design philosophy of coexisting with site, searching for a softer, more vital bond between architecture, nature and community. Within this whirlpool-inspired world of flow, we choose absence over spectacle. The café becomes a quiet annotation in the site’s continuity—like a pearl nudged ashore by the lake, resting within the whirl’s trace, waiting for people to pause, discover and linger.
