Unconstrained Construction: Poetic Wild Growth

Located in Dali, Yunnan, this project reimagines a late Qing Dynasty courtyard house as a contemporary lifestyle space. Respecting the existing architectural fabric and historical memory of the site, the renovation introduces a hybrid program that combines dining, furniture exhibition, craft displays, and a designer’s studio. Through the dialogue between old and new, the project offers a renewed future for traditional architecture while fostering a richer connection between design, culture, and everyday life.

First Impression of the Site: The Power of Wild Growth

Stepping onto the site for the first time, we were immediately overwhelmed by an intense surge of vitality. Wild grasses spread rampantly across the crumbling walls of old houses, stretching all the way into the inner courtyard. A Michelia alba pushed through the weeds, its sprawling branches reaching even up to the eaves. As sunlight filtered through the beams and columns of the aged buildings, dappled shadows fell upon the ground. This unrestrained wild growth surged through our hearts like a mighty current. The scene inevitably brought Angkor Wat to mind: here, nature and civilization coexist in harmony, while time and humanity intertwine and sustain one another, eventually merging into an inseparable whole. Our design aims to preserve this profound inspiration inherent to the site and weave it into the entire project.

Faithful Recorder: Capturing Interwoven Poetry

Inspiration Record

To preserve this profound impression, we spent extensive time lingering across the site and its surroundings. Every striking scene was frozen by the camera and documented through sketches. Beyond merely capturing visible sights, we strove to look beneath the surface, and distill the distinctive compositional logic and spatial order that emerge from the interplay of nature and humanity.

Design Strategy: Ordered Natural Poetry

We integrate functional areas into the surrounding environment, while juxtaposing the power of natural growth within architectural spaces. Much like two tacit roommates, functional demands and natural instincts jointly shape the inherent spatial order. We have found that once gentle boundaries are endowed to untamed wild growth, poetry will germinate quietly within rational order.

We pursue no sensational or dramatic design effects. In this site, timber will fade with time, steel will rust naturally, and bluestone slabs will be covered with moss gradually. We aim to create a daily living space enveloped by nature and subtle poetry. Everyone staying within this place can perceive the understated yet touching power hidden in the interplay between architecture and nature.

Folded Pathways: A Landscape That Is Transparent Yet Unreachable

Constrained by the limited site space, we adopt a folded circulation layout. Combined with borrowed scenery techniques, the views present diverse appearances from different perspectives and elevations.

Design of Growth: Both Space and Nature Crave Sunlight

Analysis Chart of Space and Sunlight Requirements for Plants

Having delivered architectural projects of varied scales, we believe that ideals take time and nourishment to take root in reality. For this reason, we have also devised a growth plan for the architecture. Centering on light conditions, we categorize spaces by sunlight exposure to align with the growth needs of plants and the activity scenarios of occupants. Through thoughtful spatial layout, we integrate plant communities and functional activities into respective zones, achieving harmonious coexistence among space, human activities and nature.

Maintenance & Construction: The Growth of Architecture

We regard not only the initial construction as a starting point, but also ongoing maintenance as part of a building’s growth journey. Restrained by construction conditions and budget in the early phase, we did not pursue impeccable craftsmanship. The stone walls are laid without rigid flatness, and cement joints remain exposed. Metal components are left unpolished, retaining their raw texture. After the rainy season, rainwater gradually settles into the crevices, while moisture lends the metal a beautiful mottled patina.

To us, construction completion is never an end. Traces of maintenance and the passage of time all bear witness to the architecture’s continuous growth.
