Project Background: From Traditional Fishing Port to Local Art Gallery

19 Art Installation Sites · Gaoqi She

As a key satellite venue of Xiamen Urban Design Week, the Gaoqi Marine Culture & Fashion Art Season takes place in Gaoqi She, Gaodian Community, Dianqian Sub-district, Huli District, Xiamen. Under the theme Sea · Tide, the art season highlights the area’s transformation from a traditional fishing port into a new destination for contemporary culture. The project explores a collaborative micro-renewal model that brings together government, universities, and the local community, using artistic interventions in public space to revitalize the area’s cultural identity. Architects and scholars from leading institutions, including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, and Chongqing University, were invited to create site-specific installations across 19 public spaces throughout the village, transforming the urban village into an open-air gallery of contemporary art.

Scattered across the distinctive lanes of Gaoqi She — brimming with the warm vibrancy of everyday local life — these works draw inspiration from marine culture and regional memory. They not only stand as visual focal points, but also function as experiential public space nodes. By integrating art appreciation with spatial exploration, they enable the public to experience firsthand the charm of art-driven community empowerment as they stroll through the neighborhood. Serving as a unifying bond, the works also vividly unfold the prelude to Gaoqi Hamlet’s evolution toward the integrated development of culture, tourism and commerce, and the reshaping of its urban cultural IP.

Site Context: Everyday Local Life Enclosed by Urban Fabric

Site Fabric of Gaoqi She

Gaoqi She is situated in the northern coastal area of Xiamen Island, in close proximity to Gaoqi Airport and several major traffic arteries. Amid rapid urban expansion, the spatial scope of this former coastal natural village has been continuously encroached upon by arterial roads and airport infrastructure, gradually evolving into a typical urban village enveloped by urban fabric.

Interlocking and Staggered Layered Geometric Volumes

Over the long course of spontaneous construction and self-organized community life, Gaoqi She has developed a highly “non-standardized” spatial form. Residential, commercial and public functions naturally overlap at the interfaces of streets, alleys and building ground floors, directly embedding daily life practices into the physical space. The enduring presence of street vendors, small shops and temporary stalls sustains high-frequency, uninterrupted daily activities, forming an authentic and vibrant scene of vernacular urban life.

Design Concept: “Sea Reef” — Spatial Art Installation with Inverted Materiality

Four Axonometric Views of the Installation

Located beside Bajiao Pond in Gaoqi She, the installation occupies a key public node shaped by earlier micro-renewal efforts and now activated as the Sea Breeze Market. Inspired by the reef—an iconic landscape of coastal settlements—the project responds to the theme Sea · Tide through an abstract reinterpretation of the sea stack. Named Marine Reef, the installation introduces a contemporary landmark into the community’s everyday public life. While natural sea stacks are mirrored by the tides and framed by the rhythms of coastal living, this artificial reef transforms stone into reflection. Its mirrored surface absorbs the surrounding streetscape and the movements of local residents, creating a dynamic dialogue between the sea, the community, and everyday life.

Mirrored “Reef” Under the Tree by the Pond

Crafted from mirrored stainless steel, the installation presents a futuristic presence without appearing detached from its context. By adopting a strategy of permeability, it transforms the surrounding vernacular environment into part of the work itself. Rather than retreating before the site’s complexity, the intervention establishes a clear contemporary identity. Its mirrored stainless steel facade reflects vivid moments of residents’ daily lives, freezing unadorned everyday scenes amidst the interplay of reality and reflection.

Spatial Interaction: A Public Stage for Everyday Life
Installation Usage Scenarios

Functionally, the installation integrates seating into the recesses and projections of its form, creating a practical resting place for local residents. Amid shifting light and shadow and the movement of reflected figures, the installation transcends its role as a static object of observation, becoming instead an accessible, participatory, and open public stage. Here, everyday moments are amplified; individuals become protagonists, and the narratives of community life quietly unfold through countless reflections.
