The day after we were commissioned to design the new Monster Coffee outlet, we headed straight to their original store at MixC One and sat down for an in-depth, lengthy conversation with the two owners. During our one-hour conversation, we heard the six-year story of Monster Coffee, learned about the current state of their original shop, and fully grasped all their sincere, down-to-earth yet resolute expectations for the new store.

Over six years in business, the original store has built up a loyal regular clientele purely by word of mouth, with returning customers making up the bulk of its visitors. Yet the owners are eager to take the brand further. They hope the new outlet will draw in new patrons from other districts, introducing Monster Coffee—a brand rooted deep in Chongqing—to a wider audience. Throughout our talk, they brought up the courtyard at their Zhoushan location more than once. Guests adore its laid-back vibe, and that kind of tranquil, unhurried atmosphere is exactly the spatial aesthetic they’ve long dreamed of recreating.

They had a clear vision for the new store: no flashy trends, no cliché internet-famous aesthetic. They wanted a space that feels solid, grounded and timeless, with a calm, understated character. At the same time, it needs to be invitingly relaxed, a place where guests of all ages are happy to linger. The new shop is just thirty meters to the left of the original one, sitting closer to the street with a far wider view. Yet after an on-site inspection, we realized the space came with inherent structural challenges: an overly high ceiling, extremely shallow depth, and an irregular obtuse fan-shaped layout. The clear interior depth measures only three meters. After accommodating all essential equipment and functional zones, barely any space remains for seating. The outdoor patio stretches 3.5 meters wide, yet several maintenance manhole covers that must be kept visible and unobstructed are scattered across the ground.

Those days we kept mulling over a series of questions:

How could we turn the space’s drawbacks into strengths?

Within such a shallow depth, how to ensure a user-friendly working area for baristas while fitting the maximum number of comfortable seats?

How to design every spot to be functional, pleasing to the eye, and free of cramped feelings?

The storefront in particular boasts an ultra-high clear height of 5.2 meters paired with a wide obtuse fan-shaped facade. The whole structure looks lofty and hollow, creating a cold, thin atmosphere that lacks a sense of gathering. Such an overly tall volume gives people a floating, disconnected feeling with no sense of belonging, making it hard for passersby to stop and step inside. After much deliberation, we integrated the client’s long-preferred laid-back natural atmosphere with the site conditions of the new Chongqing shop and formed a complete design concept: Given the shallow interior depth, available outdoor seating area, immovable ground obstacles and hollow overly high ceiling, we decided to build a exclusive little courtyard tailored for Monster Coffee Chongqing by embracing these inherent site features.

We designed a winding entry route around the manhole covers, transforming these original flaws into layered, rhythmic sequences leading into the shop. Outdoor seating lines both sides of the pathway, complemented by natural landscaping with stones and greenery. We repeatedly adjusted sightlines throughout the design process to balance the viewing experience for guests both indoors and outdoors, while also taking into account the interaction between baristas, the outdoor scenery and customers. With the overall construction budget kept in check, we intentionally lowered the ceiling height at the entrance. By compressing the upper volume and reorganizing vertical layers, we eliminate the hollow, floating sensation caused by the original excessive ceiling height and rectify the unbalanced spatial proportions. The entire storefront thus gains a steadier, more cohesive aura with a gentle, approachable visual effect, naturally shortening the distance between people and the space and drawing passersby to pause and step inside.

Construction process

In this bustling commercial district, we reshaped the spatial proportions by lowering the ceiling height and built a courtyard by working with the site’s natural constraints, crafting a quiet, laid-back little haven that belongs uniquely to Monster Coffee. The design presentation went extremely smoothly. The client was thoroughly satisfied, and the project immediately moved into the construction phase. However, the construction schedule was extremely tight. We aimed to open the store in time for the brand’s sixth anniversary celebration. Excluding weekends when construction work was prohibited, we only had eighteen days available for the full renovation and implementation. The day before opening, we accompanied the client to the flower market to pick out all the courtyard plants and landscape stones. Right after selecting the materials, we transported them back to the shop to prepare for the final decorative arrangement.

A small hiccup arose halfway through: the temporary workers we’d hired off-site left immediately after unloading the goods, refusing to plant and arrange the materials as agreed. That left only the client, the construction team and our design crew to tackle the setup ourselves. The landscape stones were far too heavy to move alone, so we hastily found local porters nearby to lend a hand. We spent hours carefully adjusting the placement of each stone and layering the foliage, refining every detail of the courtyard until dusk. Despite tight constraints on both budget and construction timeline, the final finished result won satisfaction from everyone involved.

After the grand opening of the new store, all our efforts received the perfect reward. Coffee lovers from other districts and even other cities travel here on purpose, and queues form almost every weekend and holiday. The two owners, who had always run the shop all by themselves without hiring extra staff, finally took on full-time baristas for the first time amid surging customer flow and heavy operational pressure, enabling much steadier and more relaxed daily management.

On the night the project wrapped up, we gathered for hot pot together, drawing a gentle close to this tough yet fulfilling collaboration.
