A Regained Opportunity
The project sits at the entrance of Dakan Village along the Xili Lake Waterfront Greenway, and is one of the station clusters in the overall upgrading scheme of Xili Lake Waterfront Greenway. HCS, in a consortium with James Corner Field Operations, entered the international competition for the overall design of Xili Lake Waterfront Greenway and finished in second place.During the competition phase, HCS put forward an architecture embedded in landscape strategy: individual buildings do not pursue superfluous formal expression, but accommodate service functions by working with the existing spatial language of the site’s landscape. It was this restrained, low-profile approach that led the winning SWA-led consortium to invite HCS back to the project as architectural designer for selected nodes during the detailed design stage — a precious second chance to participate.

The Original Earth Slope Was Already a Fine Site
Though wild in character, the Xili Lake Waterfront Greenway as a whole lacks open space, with large stretches of orchards and temporary structures crowding the route. This particular site is an exception: it was originally an unused spoil bank for a water conservancy project, a closed-off abandoned earth slope. Tucked beside a busy arterial road, it nonetheless retains a relatively unobstructed view toward the mountainous landscape of Xili Lake — a rare open void set between hills and water.

Rather than importing exotic spatial identities from outside, the new building preserves the well-formed landscaped earth mound, inserting enclosed and semi-outdoor spaces beneath the slope to serve visitors. The building volume does not fill the entire site; instead, it adds three-dimensional usable landscape area and forms a comfortable, functional whole with the adjacent sports ground.

A New Opportunity by the Arterial Road
As the eastern gateway to the Xili Lake Ring Greenway and the southern entrance to Dakan Village, the site benefits from inherent traffic accessibility. The rooftop of the existing water conservancy facility has also been repurposed and opened to the public as a much-needed neighborhood sports ground in this renewal. The new earth-sheltered station acts as a rest stop and cycling hub for the recreation area, where visitors can pause to rest and take in panoramic views of Xili Lake’s mountains and waters.

Let Vegetation Eventually Erase Our Design
As a city home to thousands of parks, Shenzhen has seen landscape stations emerge as a new frontier for spatial design. Yet the wildly divergent styles and ostentatious forms of these small stations have reduced the city’s finest natural landscape to a mere backdrop, turning the relaxed rhythm of nature into a strained setting for influencer check-ins. Breeze Pavilion embodies our stance on urban public space design: we hope this building will ultimately be shaded, overgrown and assimilated by the surrounding vegetation.

The building rising from the landscape

Permeable mesh railings allow climbing vines to grow through the facade, while grooved cement hanging panels provide a surface for creepers to cover the walls. Green coverage around the building is maximized to visually dissolve the earth-covered volume. The randomly laid monolithic flagstone paving and solid stone benches specified by SWA’s landscape team further reinforce the relaxed, unforced quality of the space.

Ample Outdoor Seating, Straightforward Interior Layout
Long reclining benches line all of the building’s semi-outdoor zones to maximize resting capacity for visitors. Monolithic stone benches are also arranged along the perimeter of the rooftop viewing platform. The interior space opens directly and plainly toward the main activity area, avoiding contrived spatial complexity — it is, in essence, an air-conditioned extension of the outdoors.

Excessive Formalism Feels Unwarranted
As an architectural practice rooted in landscape design, we find it difficult — even hesitant — to produce elaborate, sculptural forms when working within calm, lush natural settings. This may mean our building lacks the qualities of a viral internet landmark, but we take pride in offering an alternative model of building in nature: architecture that enhances the experience of the natural environment, rather than existing solely as a photo backdrop, has every right to exist. We are also mindful of construction practicality and long-term maintenance burdens, which is why we adopted conventional, readily available construction systems and materials. The core of the design lies in spatial strategy and the posture of merging into the larger environment. For us, the gradual weathering, softening and transformation of the building by plants and human use is not a flaw — it is the desired outcome. We believe that on the long timeline of time, subtraction is the true main theme. To over-sculpt form in the face of nature feels, quite frankly, unjustified.

Final Regrets
Several shortcomings remain in the completed Breeze Pavilion. First, due to functional constraints of the water conservancy garage driveway, the visual connection and pedestrian link between the building’s lawn courtyard and the sports ground were not realized, and the originally intended site-building relationship was not fully achieved. Second, schedule pressures and technical challenges led to the cancellation of the spiral staircase at the tree hollow opening, removing a key circulation intersection within the grass-slope building. We hope these issues can be gradually addressed over the facility’s long operational lifespan.
